Forum: GratefulDead Subject: For those that would see it...would you rather see Furthur or the 2009 Dead lineup?

I read an interview the other day where Mickey Hart said a Dead reunion is not out of the question.

I, for one, would much rather see Furthur than a reunited Dead.

However, if The Dead meant Bob would stop singing Jerry songs, I would prefer The Dead (especially if Warren Hayes was singing the Jerry tunes).

I think Warren's guitar playing isn't the best fit, but man, I love his voice.

That's the only exception though.

Now, I know a lot of you have zero interest in post-Jerry Dead, and I get that. There's no need to voice your displeasure here :D

So, if you are open to post-Jerry lineups, would you rather see Furthur or The Dead (2009, I know nothing about the previous versions)?

Definitely the Dead. Caught the '09 tour and really enjoyed the show a lot. Love Warren too, felt he fit right in.

Can't get into Furthur though. That is where I got off the bus, so to speak. I'd get right back on for some new Phil & Friends or Dead, WITHOUT Kadlecik. Just my opinion, but his guitar playing really doesn't do it for me.

On the other side of that, have seen both 7 Walkers and Mickey Hart's new project live, and both shows were excellent. Glad to be getting high quality new music from them, and if that means no more Dead reunions I can handle that.

I also caught the 09 shows at the Izod center and I swear all I remember was the opening number which was U.S.BLUES and then it became as someone said ther's a show going on. Nothing to memerable here but I could do w/o a sax player and I thought Warren Haynes fit and can play w/ any one. One thing that did stike me as kinda odd was that the place wasn't even a close to a sell out and they had whole sections of seats black tarped and the atmosphere on stage was also very very dark w/ some notion of a Star Trek outer space scene done in dark purple. The drums were extremly well miked and thounderous but as a nostolgic show I'd rather go see Tuna any day.

Furthur. Their energy, creativity, spontaneity and ability to go directions unforeseen far exceeds what came out of The Dead. No disrespect to that group of musicians but they were like an All Star team vs a well honed group of talented individuals. More than anything, however, I am glad all of these incredible incredible musicians are still able to make amazing music and teach us things we have never learned.

Do I have to pick one to see?
Neither...
If I'm going to see a good Dead cover band, I'd prefer something like DSO which is usually less expensive and more intimate.

Page McConnell and Steve Kimock would peak my interest in a 'Dead' incarnation. No W.H. it pains me to say, and no one from Furthur (maybe the backup singers- which Phil and Bobby definitely need). I would be there today if Ms. Joan was singing as well.

I prefer Phil, Bob, Jimmy and Rob with Bill and Mickey.

Of course both Jimmy and Rob now have full-time gigs so it ain't gonna happen.

I need to see 7 Walkers this year. I would take Furthur over the Dead. I loved parts of the couple Dead shows with Warren I saw( Albany,Worcester) but at times it was downright awkward. Listen to the trainwreck between china/rider in Worc. for example. I think if they played together for as long as Furthur that kind of stuff would have got ironed out. Plus it's half the price and I like Joe Russo. As far as Bob singing it depends on the song I don't mind him on a Sugaree but he should stay away from the ballads.
